Dear Reader,
This project is framed around Cormac McCarthy's novel "The Road." The story is of a post-apocalyptic journey by a man and his young son, who are trying to survive the elements and roaming bands of cannibals. It is a dark story of violence, despair, and death, but it is also about hope, the enviroment, faith, and the power of human relationships. For my project, I have responded to McCarthy's text in various ways:
Opening Esssay - A more specific introduction to the novel and its author
Extended Metaphor Poem - A short poem about fire and the multiple symbols it carries with it, particularly knowledge and human goodness which is evidenced in the text's mantra "carrying the fire."
Form Entry - A series of fictional newspaper headlines leading up to what I imagine to be an event that could destroy the world.
Double Voice Poem - A conversation of sorts between two voices who embody different aspects of the human experience. Inspired by the mythic langauge and subject of McCarthy's text.
Dialog - A conversation between two survivors of a massive destruction of society and their views about God.
Photographs - The first set I took of the abandoned Heritage USA theme park in Fort Mill, SC. The second set is a collection of photos, by others, of the abandoned town of Centralia, PA. Inspired by the environmental and technological destruction visualized in the novel of a post-human world.
Music - Two different pieces by me that were inspired by the feelings and pictures the text created in my mind. Since their really is no more music in the world of "The Road," these two pieces warn of a disaster coming.
Short Story - The story is my take on the theme of a father and son relationship and also combining elements of the science fiction genre but trying to make them more real.
I hope you enjoy it!
